Israel treats these medications differently. Of the 7 we track, 4 need approval before you arrive and 3 come in on paperwork with a supply cap.

Serious penalties: Carrying a scheduled narcotic or psychotropic medicine into Israel without a permit to carry a controlled substance from the home country's health authority, or beyond the 31-day allowance, risks treatment as an offence under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance.

Israel's Ministry of Health says travellers entering Israel may bring ordinary medicines for their own use up to a maximum of three months' supply (90 days) at the recommended dose. Its guidance does not ask for a permit or name any document for these medicines. We suggest carrying your prescription and keeping the medicine in its original packaging.

Narcotic (opioids)

Permit required

Quantity: 31 days. 31 days per gov.il/en/pages/carrying-medication and the INCB submission; a 10-day figure is the separate default domestic prescribing cap (Circular 155), extendable to 31 days with reason, and to up to 92 days across 3 prescriptions for travel abroad.

Psychotropic (ADHD stimulants, benzodiazepines, sleep)

Quantity: 31 days. Same 31-day figure and regime as narcotic class; methylphenidate has a separate 90mg/day (120mg exceptional) domestic prescribing cap.

Quantity: 90 days. Up to three months' supply (90 days) at the recommended dose (Ministry of Health guidance).

Leaving Israel

Israel publishes a different rule for taking these medicines out than for bringing them in. Only the differences are below. Anything not listed here is the same as the rule above.

If a country asks for a certificate from your own health authority

Australia does not issue export certificates for personal medication. There is no Australian office that endorses a traveller's certificate the way a Schengen country's health authority endorses an Article 75 certificate. The Office of Drug Control licenses commercial exporters, and the TGA regulates products rather than certifying individual travellers, so neither will stamp your paperwork.

What to do instead: ask your prescriber for a signed letter on practice letterhead giving your name and passport number, each medicine by generic and brand name, strength, daily dose, total quantity and the dates it covers, plus the prescriber's registration number and contact details. Have it dated close to departure, and carry the original dispensing labels.

Then contact the destination's authority in writing before you book, say plainly that Australia does not issue the certificate they ask for, and ask what they will accept in its place. Keep the reply. A written answer from the authority is the strongest document you can carry, and it is the only thing that closes this gap.
