United StatesTravelling with ADHD medication: rules, permits and documents
AmericasLast checked 20 Jul 2026Medium confidenceHow we rate a record
United States treats these medications differently. Of the 7 we track, 4 come in on paperwork with a supply cap and 3 need only your prescription.
Serious penalties: Some substances (Rohypnol, GHB, Fen-Phen) cannot be imported at all; DEA decides admissibility.

Connecting through United States
No official source confirms this. Relevant government pages, including cbp.gov (the international-visitors overview, the Transit-Without-Visa/International-to-International transit passenger program page, and the prohibited-and-restricted-items page), tsa.gov, federalregister.gov and incb.org (including the USA traveller-regulations PDF) could not be accessed. It is unconfirmed whether the US requires all internationally-connecting passengers to clear CBP immigration and customs, which would mean full entry rules (original container, valid prescription, the 50-dosage-unit combined limit on controlled substances obtained abroad, and declaration to CBP) apply even to travellers only connecting to another international flight. This is marked unclear rather than assumed, even though it is commonly stated as fact elsewhere.
If you clear immigration: Not confirmed by an official source (cbp.gov and incb.org could not be accessed). Travellers should assume that any connection through a US airport requiring collection of checked bags and re-clearing security is treated the same as entry, per the existing entry-rule guidance, until this can be checked against an accessible CBP source.
