A zoo visit that worked, on a weekday in term time

Early entry and a route that starts away from the main path bought about an hour of quiet. There is a designated quiet space on site, it is signposted poorly, and it is worth finding on the map before you need it rather than when you do.

If you only read this bit

Worked
Arriving at opening on a term-time weekday, and walking the far loop first
Did not work
The main path by eleven, and a quiet space that is not signposted from it
Ask for
The quiet space location at the ticket desk, before you go in

The first hour is the whole visit. Gates open before the school groups arrive, and the exhibits nearest the entrance are the ones everyone walks to first, so starting at the far end of the loop meant an hour with almost nobody else on the path.

By late morning that reverses completely. The main path is the loudest part of the site, the queues at the food outlets spill across it, and there is no obvious way around. Knowing where the quiet space was before we needed it is what turned a hard forty minutes into a short break.

Access details, as at May 2026

Quiet space: on site, near the middle of the loop. Not signposted from the main path.

Companion card: accepted at the ticket desk without discussion.

Step free: the main loop is step free end to end. Two side exhibits are not.

What we would do differently: book the first entry slot rather than arriving at opening, and eat before going in rather than at the site.
