Why the form asks for the generic name

A medicine can carry several brand names, and which one is printed on the box depends on where it was dispensed. Guanfacine is sold as Intuniv. A customs declaration, a permit application and a doctor's letter all ask for the generic name instead, because a country's schedule of controlled substances is written against the substance rather than against a brand. Every rule on this site is recorded against guanfacine for the same reason, which is why a country can treat it differently from another medicine you might think of as similar.

How countries class it

Our records class guanfacine as not internationally controlled unless the country says otherwise. 192 of our 198 country records answer it from that country's rule for the class, so it is treated the same as every other medicine in it. The rest name it directly, either by putting it in a different class or by stating a status of its own.

Each country page carries the wording, what the country asks you to bring, and the government source it came from. Nothing on this page is sourced by itself, so read the row you care about on its own page before you act on it.

Where it is recorded as banned

No country record resolves guanfacine to an outright ban. That is not the same as every country allowing it: where we found nothing published, the country page says so rather than reading the silence as permission.

Check it against your own trip

The class is only half the answer. What you have to carry, apply for and declare depends on where you are going and how long you are away. We will carry Intuniv over, so you only add your stops.

The check is free. The trip pack that turns it into paperwork is A$59, once. It does not renew.

This page organises publicly available government information and is not legal or medical advice. It names how a substance is classed, not whether any particular traveller will be let through a border. Rules change and enforcement varies, so confirm with the official links on the country page or with the embassy before you travel.
