The rules for Concerta (methylphenidate (extended release))

The Drugs Act 17/2011 lists methylphenidate in Schedule 1 (item 89) as well as Schedule 2. Importing a Schedule 1 drug is a criminal offence under s 112, with no permit route. MFDA's September 2026 Approved Drug List, by contrast, treats methylphenidate as importable with pre-authorisation. Get written authorisation from the ministry responsible for drug prevention (s 119(a), s 190(m)) before you travel. Carry it with your prescription. The MFDA import guideline says the prescription should show a serial number and date, your name, age, sex, address and diagnosis, the generic name, form and strength of the medicine, the total quantity in words and figures, the dose, how often it is taken, the length of treatment, and the doctor's name, registration number, signature and the seal of the practice. For more than three months' supply, also carry documents on the history of your illness.

Maximum supply: 30 days (30 days' supply, or up to 90 days for a patient with a chronic illness (MFDA guideline 4.9.1, page 12), if the prescription route is accepted. Documents about the patient's illness history are needed only for more than three months' stock.)

What to do

  1. valid prescription
  2. doctor's letter/medical necessity certificate (English recommended)
  3. written authorisation from the ministry responsible for drug prevention before import (MFDA issues the import certificate)
  4. export certificate from country of origin (for controlled drugs)
  5. medication in original packaging
  6. customs declaration on arrival

Confirm this yourself: This is based on official guidance we could not confirm against a current national source. Check with Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA); Maldives Customs Service or Maldives's embassy before you travel.
