The rules for Ritalin (methylphenidate)

NMRA's instruction for travellers allows a person to carry their own medicine without prior NMRA approval up to the quantity needed for the length of the stay or 90 days, whichever is less, with prior approval needed above that. The medicine must be in its original container, or labelled to identify its name, strength and usage instructions, and medical records or the prescription must be produced when required. NMRA excludes medicine specified in Schedule III of the Cosmetics, Devices and Drugs Act from that allowance, and separately places psychotropic substances in Schedule IIB. Methylphenidate falls inside the allowance only on the reading of those two statements together. NMRA names no ADHD medicine anywhere, so the eligibility of methylphenidate for the 90-day allowance is interpreted from the schedule classification rather than stated. NMRA (info@nmra.gov.lk, +94 11 2698896, personal-use imports pa5@nmra.gov.lk) is the authority to confirm this with before travelling.

Maximum supply: 90 days (The quantity needed for the length of the stay, or 90 days, whichever is less. Above that, prior NMRA approval is required. The 90 days is NMRA's general traveller allowance, and it reaches stimulants only on the reading that they are Schedule IIB and so are not the Schedule III medicine NMRA excludes.)

What to do

  1. valid prescription
  2. import license for personal use issued by competent authority

Confirm this yourself: This is based on official guidance we could not confirm against a current national source. Check with National Dangerous Drugs Control Board (NDDCB) or Sri Lanka's embassy before you travel.
